press release

Stuttgart/Reutlingen – Nyon, the first all-in-one eBike cycle computer with integrated navigation and fitness function from Bosch, is now available for selected eBike models with the Bosch drive system Performance Line. As a digital companion of the eBiker, Nyon is more versatile than any other cycle computer on the market.

All-rounder for eBikers
With Nyon, pronounced [ni:on], users can operate their pedelec, call up navigation features, transform the device into a personal fitness trainer, and get current information – making it a real all-rounder that will accompany the eBiker everywhere and provide networking via smartphone app or WiFi with the online portal “eBike-Connect.com”. Thanks to a waterproof, rugged housing, Nyon can also be used on excursions in the rain and off-road. A very readable, transflective 4.3-inch color display and a separate control unit next to the grip provide for safety and ease of use. This keeps both hands on the eBike handlebar and allows the rider to keep an eye on everything.

Exclusively for the Bosch Performance Line
Starting in September, we can say “Welcome to the networked eBike world!” – because then the first bicycles with Nyon will be delivered to dealers. With the intelligent multi-function control for pedelecs, Bosch is setting another milestone in the young history of eBikes. Nyon will be initially available exclusively with the Performance Line, the dynamic and powerful Bosch drive system for athletic riders. Twelve manufacturers will offer the cycle computer with model year 2015. “Nyon brings together the real and virtual world and provides users with true added value. Functions for which several devices were previously needed are now provided by a single unit. The combination of cycle computer, eBike sensors, smartphone, and online portal opens up completely new possibilities,” explains Claus Fleischer, Director of the product division Bosch eBike Systems. “Elementary functions such as the eBike control system merge with useful features such as navigation and sophisticated training programs. Nyon can also be intuitively and reliably operated.”

Comprehensive basic functions
Nyon is equipped with comprehensive basic functions and can be adapted to the needs of the user with the smartphone app “eBike Connect.” Using an app, the eBiker sets what functions he needs, what information he wants displayed when, and how it is displayed on the Nyon screen. “The combination of Nyon with the smartphone app and the online portal ‘eBike-Connect.com’ allows users to plan their tours in advance in detail,” explains Tamara Winograd, Section Manager of Marketing Communications at Bosch eBike Systems. “You can also make use of information during the trip in real time and graphically display and evaluate the recorded tour and fitness data on the portal.”

Nyon as a control center – Ride
On Nyon’s “Ride” display, that is the main screen, the rider has all important information at a glance: his own pedal power, speed, trip odometer, remaining range, support level, battery status, and time – clearly and in a modern design. Nyon receives other useful information on the smartphone app, allowing the display to be customized as desired. With a paid app upgrade, the eBiker can fine-tune the response characteristic of the motor, for example. And anyone who wants to know what eBiking provides in addition to improved fitness can have the statistical data displayed in the “Dashboard” operating mode. This includes costs saved compared to travel by car and how many trees were “rescued” by the CO2 saved.

Nyon as a guide – navigation, route planning, and evaluation
The user can also adjust the navigation display according to his preferences. Views are possible in 2D or 3D. Routes recorded by Nyon are automatically synchronized on demand with smartphone and online portal and can be retrieved there later. Those who prefer the classic navigation style can allow themselves to be actively guided from point A to point B (“routing”) by Nyon – thanks to the OSM map basis, the best bike route is always available. The bike-optimized route calculation helps to avoid busy roads and detours. Within a predefined home radius of 20 km, the routing function is free of charge; for nationwide or worldwide eBike trips, a license can be obtained with a fee-based app upgrade. Additional up-grades are planned, giving Nyon users more and more additional functions on the screen.

Nyon as a personal trainer – Fitness
Those who deliberately use their pedelecs as training devices can record, save, and analyze their training data with the Fitness display. While underlying basic values such as cadence, pedal power, and calories burned are recorded by the eBike sensors and displayed on Nyon, an optional chest strap (Polar H7) provides Nyon users with other data such as their current and average heart rate using a Bluetooth 4.0 connection. This allows the training effect to be precisely determined without any extra effort as well as analyzed and compared on the Bosch online portal “ebike-Connect.com” if desired.

Nyon as access to the online world
The app “eBike Connect” (for Android version 4.0.3 and higher and for iOS version 7 and higher) bridges the gap between Nyon, the smartphone, and the Bosch online portal “eBike-Connect.com”. It connects the eBike with the Internet world and offers useful features such as customization of the screen, route planning, and training evaluation – always and everywhere. In conjunction with a smartphone, Nyon provides information about incoming SMS messages, which for safety reasons can be read only at a standstill. “Nyon itself is the universal interface between technology, the environment, the community, and your own physique,” says Claus Fleischer. “With this multifunctional device, we succeeded in making the megatrend ‘connectivity’ into a reality on the eBike. But that is only the beginning. Over the years, Nyon will gain more and more functions – always for the benefit of the best possible user experience.”

Nyon was awarded the Red Dot Design Award 2014 and is available with German, English, Dutch, French, Italian, Spanish, and Danish menus.
