press release

Bosch is adding the first impact driver to its range of cordless tools with EC motors: the GDX 18 V-EC Professional. It combines the advantages of EC technology with the tried-and-tested, unique hexagon/square toolholder from the existing GDX model, enabling both screwdriver bits and nutsetters to be used. The GDX 18 V-EC Professional also offers an up to 100 percent longer lifetime and a more compact and lightweight design than tools with conventional motors. It drives about 490 screws measuring 6 x 65 millimeters in softwood with a 4.0 Ah battery, which equates to an increase of 40 percent over the model which does not have an EC motor. This therefore provides professional tradespeople with an even more versatile and efficient tool for all the connections required in installation, metal and wood construction.

Quick, comfortable work without kick-back
The GDX 18 V-EC Professional works without kick-back. When the ½" external square is used, the impact driver offers a maximum torque of 185 newton meters. This enables screws up to 16 millimeters in diameter to be quickly and powerfully tightened or loosened. The values are slightly lower for the ¼" internal hexagon. Three preset speed settings make work easy because the preselected speed minimizes the risk of overtightening and thus snapping screws. The first setting is designed for small screws, the second for medium screws, and the third for large screws. This corresponds, for example, to driving screws in sheet metals, wooden boards and metal profiles.

Compact tool with integrated light
The GDX 18 V-EC Professional is part of the “dynamicseries” from Bosch, a series of especially powerful and, at the same time, compact tools. It is only 158 millimeters long and weighs 1.7 kilograms together with the supplied 4.0 Ah battery. It can therefore easily be used overhead and in tight spaces or hard-to-reach areas. Three LEDs in the tool's head provide good illumination of the work area. They can be switched on and off as required and make it easier to work in poor lighting conditions.

The impact driver is powered by an 18 volt lithium-ion battery. The tried-and-tested “Flexible Power System” from Bosch ensures compatibility with all existing power tools and chargers in this voltage class and currently offers four battery sizes: 1.5 Ah, 2.0 Ah, 3.0 Ah and 4.0 Ah.

The GDX 18 V-EC Professional will be available at specialist retail outlets from May 2014 onwards in the following versions:
  • in the L-Boxx with two 4.0 Ah CoolPack batteries and a quick charger for 499 euros,
  • in a carton including L-Boxx inlay without a battery and charger for 329 euros.
All prices are recommended retail prices excluding VAT.

Bosch also offers matching accessories: the “Diamond Impact” range comprises Torx, PH, PZ and Hex screwdriver bits, each with lengths of 25 and 50 millimeters, and an “Anti-shock” bit holder. The “Impact Control” range includes different nutsetters and nutsetter sockets. Both have been specially developed for use with impact drivers.

A brief summary of the advantages of EC technology from Bosch
Unlike conventional DC electric motors with carbon brushes, a brushless EC motor is completely maintenance-free and works with a degree of efficiency of more than 80 percent instead of 60 to 70 percent. The high degree of efficiency results in less heat loss. The tool does not get as hot and can perform up to 30 percent more work per battery charge. In addition to this, the Electronic Motor Protection (EMP) protects the tool: it shuts the motor down immediately if it overloads. As a result of these factors, the lifetime of Bosch cordless tools with EC motors is double that of tools with conventional motors. EC technology also allows for a very compact and lightweight design of the tools.
