press release

A world first goes mobile: Bosch is consistently continuing to advance the innovation of inductive charging for cordless tools by adding a mobile system component, the “Wireless Charging Holster”, to the stationary “Wireless Charging System” solution which consists of a charger and 18 volt lithium-ion battery. The holster charges 18 volt cordless drill/drivers and impact drivers from Bosch, in a vehicle, on the way to the jobsite. As a result, your batteries are always charged without you losing time to charge them on the site.

Bosch revolutionized the charging of cordless tools by launching the “Wireless Charging System” in autumn 2014. Since then, Bosch has been the world’s first supplier to use the advantages of inductive energy transfer to integrate the charging process into the work process of professional tradespeople. This opens up new ways of making work efficient, with cost and time savings. The system is being continually expanded. Professional tradespeople who have to take not only their tool to the jobsite with them, but also many accessories and consumables, will be able to use the “Wireless Charging L-Boxx Bay” in their vehicle as a mobile charging station for a broad range of 18 volt cordless tools from Bosch in autumn 2015.

Recharge on the road: The “Wireless Charging Holster”
Professional tradespeople who are often out and about, such as HVAC technicians, electricians or carpenters, always used to have to remember to charge the batteries for their cordless drill/driver. The mobile charging concept from Bosch minimizes planning effort. Once integrated into the vehicle, the “Wireless Charging Holster” takes up little space and charges the battery during each journey. When the user arrives at the jobsite, he neither has to look for, nor unpack the cordless drill/driver. It is always exactly in its place, can be conveniently taken out of the holster and is immediately ready to use. A second battery is no longer needed.

The “Wireless Charging Holster” is currently designed for seven 18 volt cordless tools from Bosch, including drill/drivers, combis and impact drivers. It holds the tool including GBA 18 V 2,0 Ah MW-B Professional 18 volt lithium-ion battery and the GAL 1830 W Professional charger. The robust construction with shock-absorbing material provides a secure hold on the cordless drill/driver and charger even during travel. The holster is compatible with the in-vehicle equipment system from Sortimo. It can be mounted to pull-out rails and also to vertical or horizontal surfaces in the vehicle. Charging is performed easily and conveniently, using the twelve volt connection in the vehicle. The system includes a voltage transformer which provides the right energy transfer to the charger. Alternatively, it can also be connected directly to an existing 220 volt on-board voltage socket.

Work efficiently, save costs: Advantages of the “Wireless Charging System”
The advantages of contactless energy transfer pay off, especially in mobile use, because it is considerably more cost-effective and flexible than conventional charging systems. The cordless drill/driver is always charged and immediately ready to use when the user arrives at the jobsite, which increases productivity. As with all Bosch batteries, the inductive 18 volt batteries are also part of Bosch’s “Flexible Power System”, meaning that they are compatible with all tools in this voltage class. Moreover, the charger is very robust because it does not have any contact points, which makes it durable against water, dust and dirt.

The operating principle of the “Wireless Charging System” from Bosch
The technology, which is used in other devices, such as charging stations for electric toothbrushes and cellphones, is based on contactless energy transfer. An alternating magnetic field is generated in the transmitter using a coil. The receiver also contains a coil which is penetrated by the alternating magnetic field. This induces a voltage and generates a current flow. In the case of Bosch’s “Wireless Charging System”, this means that the charger emits a magnetic field which is received by the battery and transformed into charging current. The power transferred is, however, more than 50 times greater than that used in conventional electric toothbrushes in order to achieve the same charging times as those provided by conventional power tool battery chargers. This means that the 18 volt battery with 2.0 Ah is charged to 80 percent in 35 minutes, and 100 percent in 45 minutes.

The “Wireless Charging Holster” from Bosch will be available at specialist retail outlets from May 2015 onwards in the following versions:
  • in a carton including mounting kit for 119 euros,
  • in a carton including mounting kit and voltage transformer for 199 euros,
