press release

The classic Bosch black starter battery is now once again available directly from the manufacturer. As part of a reproduction project, Bosch Automotive Tradition has reissued the battery in its original design. While the battery exterior matches its historic counterpart, Bosch relies on modern technology and quality standards for the inner workings. Reproductions of the historic batteries therefore offer the same high safety standards and long service life as modern starter batteries from Bosch. The batteries can also be almost completely recycled. Initially, six versions of the black Bosch 6 V battery are available, costing between EUR 50 and EUR 210 plus VAT. There is the option of manufacturing 12 V batteries in the future.

Technological History: Starter Batteries for Passenger Cars Manufactured by Bosch Since 1927
Bosch was already producing the first batteries for motor cycles in 1922. The first range of car batteries followed in 1927 – hard rubber housing was still being used then. In 1955 black plastic housing was initially provided for motor cycle batteries, and Bosch converted from hard rubber to plastic housings for its passenger cars in 1962. The classic black design was finally replaced in 1966 with the introduction of direct cell connectors.

Thanks to modern technology, the batteries reproduced by Bosch Automotive Tradition featuring the historic black housing provide starting power that is up to 70% more powerful than the original battery. In addition, the batteries are more stable and almost completely recyclable. The reproduction of the black Bosch original battery design means that an important spare part is now available, allowing engine compartments of classic cars to reclaim their original appearance.
