press release

Bosch is launching a new series of small angle grinders for professionals that deserve the slogan, “The first ever brake that lets you go faster”. All six models are equipped with the “Intelligent Brake System”, the first brake module to work magnetically. Unlike mechanical or electronic brake systems, it works reliably even if there is a power outage and ensures that the angle grinders stop 70 percent faster than an angle grinder without a brake system. This fast braking is an advantage especially in industrial production. Since the disc comes to a standstill faster, the angle grinder can be put down faster between the individual work steps, which means the user can carry on working sooner. This saves time and money.

Tool features meet high safety standards
The brake function makes an important contribution to user protection. These tools are also suitable for applications in which high safety standards apply, such as in refineries, on oil platforms and in crane, ship, tank and container construction. Two of the six models are additionally equipped with the tried-and-tested “Protection Switch”, a deadman switch that can be operated along the entire length of the handle – regardless of whether the angle grinder is held at the front, back or in the middle. As a result, users always have full control over the tool even in difficult working positions. Both product features combined make it extremely easy for safety engineers to meet the increasingly high work safety requirements in the industrial sector.

Functionality and advantages of the Bosch “Intelligent Brake System”
If the angle grinder is switched off or there is a power outage, two parallel magnets in the gearbox are aligned so that their north and south poles face each other. The resulting magnetic flow generates a braking torque in a copper disc positioned between them (eddy current principle). As a result, the disc of the angle grinder comes to a standstill very quickly. This happens automatically, without the user having to activate the brake function. The enclosure of the gearbox protects the “Intelligent Brake System” reliably against external influences such as dust or oil. Unlike mechanical or electronic systems, it is also completely wear-free and maintenance-free: there is neither the braking friction present in mechanical systems, nor does the magnetic brake have any effect on the lifetime of the carbon brushes as electronic systems do. This is a further advantage in terms of time and cost saving.

Symbiosis of new and tried-and-tested functions
The small angle grinders with “Intelligent Brake System” have power ratings of 1 200 and 1 500 watts respectively and are equipped with Constant Electronic. They enable fast work progress, have a tool-free adjustable protective guard, a handy shape and a large spindle lock button for quick and easy accessory changes. They are also equipped with extensive protective features: Vibration Control, Kick-Back Stop, soft start and restart protection. The GWS 12-125 CIPX Professional and GWS 15-125 CIPX Professional models are additionally equipped with the “Protection Switch”. Typical applications include grinding welded seams and deburring or cutting pipes and metal plates. In addition to this, these angle grinders are also suitable for cutting concrete or removing rust and paint.

The small angle grinders with “Intelligent Brake System” will be available at specialist retail outlets from May 2014 onwards. The prices are between 169 euros for the GWS 12-125 CIX Professional and 219 euros for the GWS 15-125 CIEX Professional and the GWS 15-125 CIPX Professional. All prices are recommended retail prices excluding VAT. Bosch also offers an extensive range of accessories for small angle grinders. These include products such as cutting, grinding and fiber sanding discs.
