Stuttgart/Reutlingen, Germany – Winter is approaching with great strides; even in the lowlands, the first snow of the year has already fallen. This means the season is coming to a close for many ebike riders. Ulrich Lippmann, service manager at Bosch eBike Systems, offers some basic tips about the subject, especially for the wintering of lithium-ion batteries. “To extend the service life of the Bosch PowerPacks, the batteries should be stored in the house at a temperature of 5 to 20 degrees Celsius – dry and protected from light. In addition, it is advisable to not send the batteries into hibernation either completely discharged or fully charged. We recommend a charge level of 50 to 60 per cent”, says Ulrich Lippmann. It is not necessary to keep the battery connected to the charger during the winter. That's because the Bosch PowerPacks with lithium-ion technology have virtually no self-discharge.

“Our eBike System is of course ready to be used in the winter”, adds the service manager. For all ebikers with no fear of wind and weather who do not want to do without the electrically assisted tailwind during the winter season, the following tips are helpful: It is best that bike riders charge their ebike batteries in the house and put them onto the eBike shortly before they begin their journey. The ideal charging temperature is 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. If the battery temperature is below 0 degrees Celsius, the intelligent battery management system from Bosch prevents charging – in order to protect the battery cells.

In general, low temperatures limit the efficiency of the batteries and thus lead to shorter ranges. Neoprene protective sleeves for Bosch PowerPacks are now commercially available. In addition to protection against moisture and dirt, they offer thermal protection and positively influence the battery capacity – and thus also the range.

In the cold season, more attention should be paid not just to the eBike drive system. Brakes, lights and the chain in particular must function optimally. The extraordinary stress caused by cold, moisture and road salt can be countered by simple means. In addition to a well-oiled chain, it is also advisable to clean the eBike more often in winter than in summer, and also to protect it from staying permanently wet. “For the winter check, our Bosch eBike dealers are happy to assist cyclists with help and advice as well as the necessary tools of the trade”, says Ulrich Lippmann.
