Munich – North America’s largest-ever Praesideo public address and emergency sound system is installed at Vancouver International Airport in Canada. To provide necessary functionality for airline ground personnel, customer service and airport operations, the contractor, Sound Dymax of Toronto, designed a system comprised of 12 fully-integrated public address systems containing 300 amplifier channels, to cover three terminals.

With over 2,000 installed systems worldwide, Praesideo is one of the leading digital public address and emergency sound systems. One of its key advantages is that it is entirely programmable and interfaces with other security systems. The public address system thereby aids the Vancouver Airport Authority in meeting its ongoing objective to provide high-quality service to its customers while also reducing its operating and maintenance costs.

One of the features that improve the system’s efficiency, and therefore save time and money, are the gate agents. At the touch of one button, an agent can begin the boarding process using pre-recorded announcements, and multiple languages can easily be added. Most boarding processes can now be performed with only one gate agent instead of several staff. “The use of pre-recorded announcements frees the gate agents up so they can focus on their first priority, providing customer service and support,” explains Dave Parson of the Vancouver Airport Operations Group.

Improved sound quality and intelligibility in eight languages
The Praesideo system by Bosch also provides system supervision, a key requirement made by the customer. At Vancouver International Airport, this function is implemented via direct feeds to each amplifier. Using existing speaker lines for each amp, a pilot tone is sent out to each individual zone. A fault log is generated via the system software to indicate specific problems per zone, which allows for quick solutions.
This functionality proved to be very beneficial when the system was first brought online and exposed numerous shorts and grounds in the existing speaker and wiring installation. The airport staff was able to repair the speaker circuits thanks to the detailed fault information. This, in turn, resulted in an enhanced coverage area and improved system performance, higher intelligibility and reduced “sound clutter” and “white noise” in the airport.

Ranking of announcements based on importance
Announcements can be broadcast across the whole airport, with Praesideo enabling the prioritization of such messages based on their urgency or importance. The new system combines essential functions into a common infrastructure. By using dynamic routing, a network handles the transport of audio information, such as pre-recorded notices, as well as control commands and instructions.
“The installation has been very, very successful,” stated Dave Parson. “The stability of the Praesideo-based system has been excellent, as has the ease of use and access to system data and records. And not only for us, but for the 60,000 passengers who hear their boarding and baggage arrival announcements through the system every day.”
