“5th Technology Experience Day” at Bosch: High school students look behind the scenes Hands-on research and development

Stuttgart/Schwieberdingen – The fifth “Technology Experience Day” will be held on October 21, 2011 in the Bosch Engineering Center in Schwieberdingen, north of Stuttgart. Some 330 students from 34 participating high schools in the greater Stuttgart area will have a chance to get to know the company’s products and the technologies it is involved in. The aim of the event is to demonstrate what science subjects such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry have to do with working as an engineer at Bosch. “We want to spark young people’s interest in technology at an early age and hope this will encourage them to choose a related field of work or study,” said Dr. Wolfgang Malchow, the director of industrial relations at Bosch. “Even though the talent is there, it is still the case that too few young people – especially young women – are opting to study science and technology. We want to tackle this problem, in particular to attract more women into these professions,” he said.

Insight into a highly innovative company
During their behind-the-scenes look at the Schwieberdingen Engineering Center, the high school students will experience high-tech live: the day’s schedule features a hands-on introduction to technical products, visits to experimental labs and to prototype production facilities, demonstrations of ABS, and a ride in a hybrid vehicle on the proving ground. In addition, the “Technology Experience Day” will see faculty staff from the University of Stuttgart providing information on eight courses of study. This will be followed by an opportunity for the students to get to know two career options related to a course of study. They will have the chance to speak with young associates and engineers from the relevant specialist departments about these careers.

The event gives these technical specialists of the future an insight into one of Germany’s most innovative companies. Last year, the Bosch Group filed over 3,800 patent applications. To preserve its technologically leading position, Bosch will spend some four billion euros on research and development in 2011.

Education and training: an aspect of corporate social responsibility
This year, the company will take on some 9,000 university graduates worldwide – 1,200 of them in Germany. In order to continue to attract highly-trained recent graduates in the future, Bosch has launched its “InterCampus Program,” which aims to expand the company’s support of universities worldwide. Around roughly 50 million euros are being invested in this. This will provide support for universities and research institutes in Germany, China, India, and the U.S. over the next ten years.

At the same time, Bosch regards the occupational training of young people as an integral part of its corporate social responsibility. In September, some 1,500 young people started occupational training with Bosch at around 60 locations and 100 operating units across Germany. 63 percent of them opted for a technical career. But training is just the first step. Bosch invests 200 million euros each year in qualification and ongoing training for its associates, 120 million euros of this in Germany.

In addition, Bosch is a committed founder member of the “Knowledge Factory – Companies for Germany” initiative. This initiative seeks to kindle children’s and adolescents’ interest in science and engineering through practical projects. As part of this, 180 elementary schools and kindergartens were provided with “Kitec”(“children discover technology”) kits. Bosch has already entered into 117 partnerships with educational establishments such as kindergartens and schools across Germany.
