press release

In 2012, Bosch will be launching an improved variant of its tried and true ZOH brake caliper. In the new ZOHe (zero offset harmonized evolution) generation, engineers have further improved the rigidity of the caliper and the guidance (system) for the brake pads and housing. As these are especially accurate and smooth-running, the caliper assumes an optimally symmetric position when the brakes are released. This has two advantages: first, clearance is kept very low, which improves pedal feel. Second, residual braking torque is reduced, which in its turn lessens driving resistance and reduces brake-pad wear. Not least, there is less noise and vibration. In its gray iron variant, the new floating caliper model is already 5 percent lighter than the current generation. The aluminum variant is a further 7 percent lighter.

The new ZOHe generation is suitable for installation on the front or rear axle. It comes in variants with one or two pistons, which cover all vehicle classes from small passenger cars to light trucks. For the rear axle, Bosch offers a variant with an electric motor mounted directly on the caliper. This motor performs a parking brake function. An alternative cable solution is still available for applying the parking brake by hand or with the help of an electric motor.

High-performance simulation tools were used in the development of the new brake caliper. These tools allowed engineers to reduce the caliper’s weight while at the same time increasing its rigidity. This is a key factor in brake performance and pedal feel.

Apart from brake calipers, the Bosch Chassis Systems Brakes division also supplies brake discs and drum brakes, as well as brake boosters and tandem master brake cylinders.
