press release

The Car Multimedia division at Bosch has developed the RNS 315 CN radio navigation system for the Volkswagen Group to cater for the specific requirements of the Chinese market. The system equipped with a color touch-screen display is easy to operate, calculates routes quickly, and provides reliable route guidance with visual and acoustic driving recommendations. Thanks to a phonetic system for transcribing Chinese characters called Pinyin First Letter Input, entering a destination in Chinese is incredibly easy too. Furthermore, the RNS 315 CN impresses with its excellent reception and sound performance as well as a wide variety of convenient connectivity options. The integrated Bluetooth interface affords safe in-car telephoning.

Straightforward operation with an easy-to-read display
The 6.5-inch touch-screen display combined with easy-to-operate keys and a central control knob make handling and operation intuitive. A special feature of the system is its dual-mode operation: with the exception of a few primary functions, the RNS 315 CN can be controlled via the touch screen just as easily as with the control knob. Depending on what features the vehicle is equipped with, it is also possible to adjust the volume, select music tracks and control the telephone from the steering wheel.

The infotainment system’s color display provides great readability and an excellent overview of the various on-screen user menus, such as the menus for radio stations, audio file track selection, navigation maps, telephone lists and the climate control system.

The "panning mode" feature allows you to scroll very easily through the map by touch. This gives you a very quick overview of the route and its surroundings. Driving recommendations provided during route guidance are also shown by the RNS 315 CN radio-navigation system as directional arrows centrally in the car’s instrument panel and thus directly in the driver’s field of view.

Economical route reduces fuel consumption
Alongside the fastest and shortest route, the system's route calculation function also offers users the most economical route. The system in this case recommends routes to your destination offering the lowest fuel consumption possible and thus reduced CO2 emissions. You can choose to display the on-screen map in two dimensions or as a three-dimensional bird’s eye view.

The destination can be entered as an address, selected from the points of interest (POIs) or marked directly on the map. Furthermore, you can access up to 50 personal favorites as well as the last 50 stored destinations. The RNS 315 CN also allows you to save destinations under a Chinese name in the destination memory.

During route guidance, users can choose to have nearby filling stations and car parks displayed to them together with their distances and compass directions. Furthermore, users can search for and then directly select points of interest, not only by way of categories but also by performing a free text search upon entering a keyword. Such points of interest can include destinations like airports, hospitals, restaurants, hotels or tourist attractions.

Using an SD card, you can expand this selection of POIs by adding your own personal points of interest. To ensure you do not overlook or miss one of your personal destinations during your journey, you can also, if you wish, configure the RNS 315 CN to point them out to you by playing a sound. The navigation data are also stored on an SD card, which means the CD drive that comes as standard is always free to be used for playing music.

Safety thanks to assistance systems
Various device features such as the automatic junction zoom, the lane assistant, and lane recommendations on highways make drivers’ lives easier. The lane recommendation function provides additional clarity by displaying information about which lane is the optimum one to use at complex junctions and exits. On highways the 3D highway entry guidance feature provides you with a good overview.

Depending on what features the vehicle is equipped with, it is also possible to display further functions. This means that if an optional reversing camera is installed, the system can also display on its screen the camera view of what is happening behind the car, thus assisting with parking whilst reversing.

Twin tuner with first-rate reception
With the twin tuner in the RNS 315 CN, Bosch delivers a premium audio experience in terms of tuner concept, the latest MP3 technologies and connectivity options. The tuner with the innovative ADR2 chipset (Advanced Digital Receiver) can almost completely eliminate multipath interference and play very distant stations that until now have only been barely audible.

The second tuner uses the Traffic Message Channel (TMC) reports that are transmitted by the radio broadcasting companies. Reception of TMC traffic reports enables the dynamic navigation function to calculate routes that bypass traffic jams. The driver is informed visually and acoustically about upcoming traffic disruptions. The type of disruption is indicated with a color code and a graphical representation on the map. Furthermore, the device receives notifications about traffic disruptions even when route guidance is not activated. This is particularly helpful and convenient when driving in everyday commuter traffic.

Automotive connectivity for straightforward plug and play
The audio system in the RNS 315 CN is equipped with a comprehensive range of connectivity options. Thanks to the USB port, you can connect portable MP3 devices, USB flash drives or an iPod® just as easily as a portable hard disk drive or an iPhone®. The integrated drive of the RNS 315 CN can play compact discs as well as discs you have burned yourself containing MP3 or WMA compressed audio files. Furthermore, the device is equipped with a second memory card slot in its front panel for playing the now very common SD and MMC cards and also has an AUX-In connection for further audio sources.

Bluetooth connection for safe telephoning
For safe in-car telephoning, a Bluetooth mobile phone can be connected to the system and conveniently operated using the menu. The hands-free feature and important functions such as the call list and phone book are available automatically as soon as the telephone is connected to the infotainment system via Bluetooth. Furthermore, using Bluetooth audio streaming (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile – A2DP), audio data can be transmitted wirelessly from the mobile phone to the audio system and be played there as music. A special highlight of the telephone function is the voice control feature of the RNS 315 CN. This allows drivers in the Volkswagen to always have their hands free when operating the phone so they can telephone safely while driving.
