FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – The Bosch Community Fund recently awarded a $75,000 grant to School District 89 in Broadview, Illinois, for programming in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities. Two programs made possible through the grant are Project Lead The Way (PTLW), an initiative that enhances STEM education in middle schools, and Destination Imagination (DI), a leading educational non-profit that creates project-based afterschool programming.

“‘We are very pleased to support School District 89 in Broadview, Illinois, in their STEM efforts. We hope to continue to help bring important and innovative programs to our educators and children in the community,” said Eunice Marriott, director of projects, Automotive Aftermarket, Bosch. The programs expose students in grades three to eight to applied-learning experiences and critical-thinking strategies in the sciences using hands-on activities, while also providing key classroom resources to educators. Each program aims to nurture students’ interest in STEM programs beyond the classroom and into related careers. DI emphasizes fostering students’ creativity and curiosity through open-ended academic challenges, and STEM learning is integrated into elementary afterschool activities. DI’s creative approach to learning aims to provide younger students with the tools to further develop their problem-solving skills and helps in addressing real-life issues. PLTW activities support educators to better prepare students for a more rigorous STEM curriculum in high school.

In addition to STEM-focused educational activities, PLTW aides in building a cross-district leadership model that reinforces a strong support system for educators to develop innovative and effective data-driven strategies for overall school improvement. “The Bosch Community Fund grant allows District 89 students and teachers to challenge themselves in STEM fields,” said Barbara Dahly, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, School District 89. “As participants engage in STEM learning experiences, through PLTW and DI, they grow into prepared students for high school, college and beyond. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to provide additional 21st century learning opportunities for our students and teachers through the generosity of the Bosch Community Fund!” Since 2015, organizations in the Broadview community have received $136,000 in Bosch Community Fund grants.
