- Diesel and electric engines with Bosch technology make the list - Bosch maintains focus on diversified powertrain options - Diesel powertrain options in U.S. growing to 60 vehicle models by 2017 FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Bosch has consistently made key contributions to Ward’s 10 Best Engines, and this year is no different. Eight of the award-winning engines feature Bosch gasoline, diesel or electric powertrain technologies, demonstrating its leadership in innovation and engine technology in the automotive industry. For the first time, the list includes three diesel engines, all of which feature Bosch’s state-of-the art diesel technology, including common rail injectors, engine control units, high-pressure pumps, high-pressure rails and sensors. Consumers are beginning to understand the full benefits of choosing diesel, such as increased fuel efficiency and lower exhaust emissions, without compromising power. According to Bosch, there will be more than 60 clean diesel vehicles available in the U.S. by 2017, up from 37 models currently available. “Clean diesel vehicles are increasingly more important for helping automakers achieve future CAFE standards. Consumers are delighted with significantly improved fuel efficiency in real-world driving, without the need for any compromise,” said Bernd Boisten, regional president, Diesel Systems North America, Robert Bosch LLC. “Having these engines included on this list validates that today’s diesel technology provides overall powertrain excellence with optimal power, efficiency and lower total cost of ownership.” Bosch Diesel Systems North America components are found on the following Ward’s 10 Best Engines: • 2.0-liter Turbodiesel DOHC I-4 (Chevrolet Cruze) • 3.0-liter Turbodiesel DOHC I-6 (BMW 535d) • 3.0-liter Turbodiesel DOHC V-6 (Ram 1500 EcoDiesel) Commitment to Electrification One electric motor made Ward’s 2014 list – Chrysler Group’s 83-kW electric motor on the Fiat 500e. Bosch provides the battery pack, inverter, electric machine and regenerative brake hardware. Gasoline Direct Injection Stays Strong Bosch gasoline products, such as direct injection pumps, oxygen sensors and engine controllers played a role in the development of four of the list’s top-performing engines. Bosch’s direct injection system combines an engine control unit, high-pressure pump and fuel injector to optimize fuel consumption and improve engine efficiency. Streamlining the way fuel is injected into the vehicle’s engine, Bosch’s system is able to improve power and mileage. By taking advantage of Bosch’s direct injection system, downsizing the engine and pairing it with a turbocharger, automakers are striving to achieve 2025 CAFE regulations, which require all automobiles to reach an average of 54.5 mpg. “Ward’s 10 Best Engines is an important indicator of what consumers are demanding from their vehicles,” said Sujit Jain, regional president, Gasoline Systems North America, Robert Bosch LLC, whose division also provides components and systems for vehicle electrification. “The volume of gasoline engines produced exhibit the great strides the industry has made in terms of increasing fuel efficiency while maintaining power and functionality. Bosch is committed to working with the automakers to provide innovative solutions that continue to boost the efficiencies and performance of today’s and tomorrow’s vehicles.” Bosch Gasoline Systems North America components are found on the following Ward’s 10 Best engines: • 83-kW Electric (Fiat 500e) • 1.8-liter Turbocharged DOHC I-4 (Volkswagen Jetta) • 1.0-liter EcoBoost DOHC I-3 (Ford Fiesta) • 2.7-liter DOHC H-6 Boxer (Porsche Cayman) • 3.0-liter Supercharged TFSI V-6 (Audi S5) About Ward’s 10 Best Engines Selected by the editors of the Penton Media Inc.’s Ward’s Automotive Group, the 2014 list marks the 20th year for the Ward’s 10 Best Engines program, the only award in the North American auto industry that honor powertrain excellence. The awards were presented in Detroit on Jan. 15, during the North American International Auto Show. Powertrains are judged based on power capabilities, efficiency and engine noise.
