Stuttgart/Reutlingen — An eBike that evolves with the times and constantly offers new functions: what sounded like a distant vision of the future a few years ago is becoming reality with the eBike Flow app and the smart system from Bosch eBike Systems. The eBike Flow app is the central connection to the eBike, which can be enhanced in the future with new functions and additional digital services via over-the-air updates. “With the eBike Flow app and the smart system, we are continuously evolving the eBike experience and shaping the digital eBike mobility of the future,” says Claus Fleischer, CEO of Bosch eBike Systems.

Expanding the eBike

In the future, the eBike can be easily updated by the touch of a finger via the eBike Flow app. The updates are downloaded 'over the air' from the Internet and transferred to the eBike via Bluetooth — conveniently from your smartphone. “This offers eBikers significant added value. They can update their eBikes themselves at any time and equip it with new features that we will develop in the future. This means that the eBike can be enhanced even after purchase and that it stays current throughout its entire service life,” explains Fleischer.

Customising the riding experience

Whether you’re on your way to work or on the trail at the weekend: To ensure that the eBike’s handling characteristics suit your riding style or the selected route, the available riding modes can be customised using the eBike Flow app. The strength of the support, dynamics, maximum speed and maximum torque of the drive can thus be flexibly adjusted to personal needs and requirements. The eBike Flow app is just as tailor-made in terms of design: It can be designed by the eBike manufacturer in their own look, allowing eBikers to always stay connected to their favourite brand.

Recording activities

Forgetting to start your ride on your connected devices is a thing of the past because you can always rely on the eBike Flow app: It automatically detects when the eBike ride starts. Simply get on the eBike, pedal away and the activities are recorded completely automatically. You don’t even have to take out your smartphone at any time. The recorded activities include all relevant riding and fitness data which can be evaluated, exported or simply shared with Apple Health after the ride.

Everything at a glance

The eBike Flow app bundles all important information on the home screen — from the connection status of the eBike to the next service appointment and the current charge status of the battery. It also shows the total mileage of the drive and how it is distributed among the different riding modes.

“The functions of the eBike Flow app, with which we are starting in the first step, are just the beginning for us. In the future, many more features will follow that will make eBiking safer, smarter and more individualised,” says Fleischer. “In the further technical development of eBike components, optimisations can be expected in the coming years, but we will increasingly come up against physical limits. However, digitalisation will open up countless new opportunities for us in the future. Connected biking is becoming more and more important.”

The eBike Flow app will be available with the first functions from autumn 2021 as a download for Android and iOS and will be supported in English, German and French. More languages will follow.
