Bosch cooperating with partners on efficient fleet management 750 new electric vehicles planned for the Stuttgart region Get eReady research project launched

Stuttgart – By 2015, the Stuttgart region will be home to a fleet of electric cars, and the Get eReady project will play an active role in its development. Between now and then, 750 newly registered hybrid and electric vehicles are expected to hit the streets. The project is part of Baden-Württemberg’s “Living Lab BWe mobil” initiative. Several companies and organizations are involved in the project, including Bosch Software Innovations GmbH, Athlon Car Lease Germany GmbH Co. KG, the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI), Heldele GmbH Elektro-Kommunikations-Technik, and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The project is set to receive 4.7 million euros in funding from Germany's Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

“The central aim of this research project is to gain insights into how large e-mobility fleets can be operated efficiently in practice,” says Daniela Hartmann-Ege, product group leader of the Innovation Cluster Mobility at Bosch Software Innovations. Thanks to the high number of vehicles in the fleet, reliable information can now be gathered on driver profiles, charging needs, and the required set-up of the supply infrastructure. According to Hartmann-Ege, the project will play an important role on the road to making electric vehicles a common sight on city streets. By making e-mobility accessible to a large number of users, the project will spark drivers' enthusiasm and provide them with first-hand experience with regard to the possibilities of electric driving.
In close cooperation with the project participants, the "Get eReady" partners are setting up a broad infrastructure of charging stations. This supply network will be compatible with all mobile end devices currently available on the market, as well as with internet-connected charge spots. The aim is to make the power supply in publicly accessible spaces easier for e-vehicles to reach. Over the course of the project, the charging stations will be placed at locations where they can also be used by third parties. The intelligent networking technology developed by Bosch Software Innovations enables access to the power grid and individual invoicing with operators.

“Get eReady” is geared towards commercial, public, and non-commercial fleet operators with at least ten vehicles. “In urban centers, vehicle fleets are often set up to operate at high capacity on a limited number of short routes. This is a perfect fit for the range of electric vehicles,” says Daniela Hartmann-Ege. The project participants receive a subsidy that they can use to purchase a new e-vehicle. They are also offered a free assessment of their current fleet operations.

The Get eReady project is one of about 40 projects initiated under the auspices of Baden-Württemberg’s “Living Bwe Mobil” e-mobility showcase initiative. As part of the German federal government's e-mobility showcase initiative, it will receive 4.7 million euros in funding from Germany's Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

In April 2012, the German federal government selected four regions across Germany as e-mobility showcases. Following a resolution of the German Bundestag, these regions will receive funding for research and development in the area of alternative drivetrain technologies. In total, the German government has earmarked 180 million euros for the e-mobility showcases program. In several large-scale regional demonstration and pilot projects, electromobility will be tested at the interface between energy systems, vehicles, and transport systems.

"Get eReady" is part of Baden Württemberg’s “LivingLab BWe mobil” showcase, a grouping of more than 100 partners from business, science, and the public sector who are cooperating to conduct research on electromobility in practice. The major research project is also receiving support from the state of Baden-Württemberg. The project activities are focused mainly in the metropolitan areas of Stuttgart and Karlsruhe, and have attracted considerable international attention. With a series of interrelated projects, the “LivingLab BWe mobil” initiative stands for a systemic approach to making e-mobility accessible to all. The broad range of projects includes e-bikes, electric vehicles, electric transporters, and plug-in public buses. As a result, the projects address the topics of intermodality, fleets and commercial traffic, infrastructure and energy, city and traffic planning, communication and participation, as well as training and qualification. “LivingLab BWe mobil” is coordinated by the Landesagentur für Elektromobilität und Brennstoffzellentechnologie e-mobil BW GmbH (state agency for electromobility and fuel cell technology) and Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart GmbH (WRS).
