In all areas of pharmaceutical production more and more medications are made of toxic substances. Dust originating from these substances presents a considerable hazard to the operating staff. Comprehensive protective measures have already been taken for the production of active ingredients and tablets. Up to now, however, similar protection has not been available for packaging machines.

Bosch Packaging Technology now presents a solution for blister packaging tablets made of such ingredients: a Containment System. It is mounted on the TLT 1400 blister machine and protects the operator from, for example, carcinogenic dust which develops when the blister web is charged with tablets in the blister machine. The system's high operating convenience and low space requirement are indeed remarkable.

Other protection concepts, such as full isolating suits for the operators, are higher cost than the containment system. In addition, they are less flexible to work with and uncomfortable for the operator. The usual solutions employing half-suit isolator technology are also less than ideal. A containment system which excludes the operator entirely is the best idea. Within the containment system enclosing all machine components in contact with product dust a Wash-in-Place (WIP) process can be integrated. For easier qualification of the blister line, the containment system provides controlled atmospheric conditions, easy device calibration and reproducible production parameters.

The Bosch TLT 1400 blister machine offers an excellent basis for a containment solution. The machine's output is 400 blisters per minute with a die-cutting size of 90 x 145 millimeters and a web width of 155 millimeters. Additionally, the machine comes with size parts of unrivaled small size and weight, for quick and tool-free size part changes. Furthermore, the compact dimension only 3.3 meters in length allow the installation of a small containment system. In contrast to the conventional rotary infeed, the linear infeed (typical for Bosch), is easy to operate, clean, and change within the contain-ment system. Due to these advantages only one operator is neces-sary. Training of the operator personnel requires a comparably short time due to an ergonomic and largely self-explanatory touch screen display and operation panel.
