New Display System by Bosch
Innovative Information Center for the Mercedes S Class
Modern Instrument Cluster in Classic Design

The cockpit of the new Mercedes S Class presents itself as an especially user-friendly information center with innovative solutions for the instrument cluster and central display. In a variable, situation-related display, the driver is able to have only that information displayed which he or she anticipates and needs. Momentarily unimportant information fades into the background where it will not distract the driver.

For the first time, this new display system from Bosch incorporates a dial-type gauge and various graphic representations in alternation. This concept was made possible by on-screen display of a software-generated speedometer. This solution gave developers a high degree of flexibility in designing the HMI (Human Machine Interface) and thus the prerequisites for an especially clearly organized and simultaneously intuitively understandable information management system.

While important driving related information as well additional information desired by the driver is displayed on the instrument cluster in the primary display area, the central display positioned between the driver and front-seat passenger provides information about additional convenience and infotainment functions. The variable screen displays are controlled by a display management system that responds the current driving situation on the one hand and operation by the driver on the other. This way, an optimized supply of information is available at all times without putting undue strain on the driver with optical and acoustic messages of secondary importance.

The Instrument Cluster
Tucked away behind the dark tinted cover glass of the instrument cluster is the latest technology in classically elegant design. Only at second glance when starting the car does one become aware of an 8" TFT color display on which the speedometer is displayed as an animated graphic between the tank, temperature and tachometer with mechanical gauges. The screen offers a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels in 16:9 format. The scales of the "real gauges" and the speedometer scale are identical in design. Thanks to black-screen technology with thirty percent light permeability and backlighting with CCFL tubes, the displays are extremely sharp and very easy to read. With the large display in the center of the instrument cluster, there is considerably more area available in comparison to ordinary displays in order to support the driver with situation-related information in the driver's direct field of vision. This means that the content displayed can be presented in a highly visible manner – thus avoiding irritation and reducing distraction.

Current warning messages, selection menus and navigation information is presented in the middle of the display. In this mode, the pivot point of the animated speedometer is blacked out and the remaining tip of the speedometer "needle" conveys the speed information. When the night-vision system offered for the first time in the new S Class is displayed in the instrument cluster, the speedometer appears as a bar at the bottom of the screen. In this way, a large area of the screen is available for displaying this infrared night vision system; the driver especially benefits from this in poor visibility conditions.

The Central Display
The central display is located right next to the instrument cluster. It is equipped with electronics with independent intelligence and integration in the vehicle network. The design and layout of the central display is adapted to that of the instrument cluster, so that both devices are perceived as a single unit.

The central display shows convenience and infotainment information such as radio, navigation, air conditioning or video entertainment. The 8" TFT color display is of the same type as that in the instrument cluster. Above and beyond this, it can be adjusted by motor and thus oriented for optimal driver or front-seat passenger visibility. With a transmission rate of 290 Mbps on four data channels, the central display is suitable for all media requirements.

Variety and Clarity
Together, the instrument cluster and central display form a flexible, driver oriented information system. Despite the wide variety of display possibilities, the cockpit of the new S Class distinguishes itself through outstanding clarity. This practical information management system permits intuitively understandable operation, supports the driver, and thus improves user ergonomics as well as traffic safety

The Bosch scope of delivery for the Mercedes S Class also includes sensors, engine control and throttle devices as well as spark plugs for petrol engines, the 3rd generation common rail with Piezo inline injectors for diesel engines, the windscreen wiper system with dual-motor drive, the starting motor and generator as well as the airbag controller and the park distance control system.

The Bosch Group is a leading global supplier of technology and services. According to preliminary figures, some 270,000 associates generated sales of roughly 38 billion euros in the areas of automotive and industrial technology, consumer goods, and building technology in fiscal 2009. The Bosch Group comprises Robert Bosch GmbH and its more than 300 subsidiaries and regional companies in over 60 countries. If its sales and service partners are included, then Bosch is represented in roughly 150 countries. This worldwide development, manufacturing, and sales network is the foundation for further growth. Each year, Bosch spends more than 3.5 billion euros for research and development, and applies for over 3,000 patents worldwide. With all its products and services, Bosch enhances the quality of life by providing solutions which are both innovative and beneficial.

The company was set up in Stuttgart in 1886 by Robert Bosch (1861-1942) as “Workshop for Precision Mechanics and Electrical Engineering.” The special ownership structure of Robert Bosch GmbH guarantees the entrepreneurial freedom of the Bosch Group, making it possible for the company to plan over the long term and to undertake significant up-front investments in the safeguarding of its future. Ninety-two percent of the share capital of Robert Bosch GmbH is held by Robert Bosch Stiftung GmbH, a charitable foundation. The majority of voting rights are held by Robert Bosch Industrietreuhand KG, an industrial trust. The entrepreneurial ownership functions are carried out by the trust.
